I'll be honest, when I first started looking into this, I expected a straightforward number. Something like "$25 a day, done." Or that they're holding a deposit on your card for a week and a half after you send the gear back. Or that there's an "optional" insurance fee that somehow wasn't optional at checkout.

Before you hand over your card info, just ask:

• Is shipping included both ways, or is that separate?
• Is there a deposit, and when does it actually come back?
• What counts as "damage" versus normal wear from being, you know, used?

Is renting even the right move?

That's especially true if you're:

• Running a one-day event and needing Wi-Fi for a few hours, not forever

Before you actually book anything

Quick list, run through it with whoever you're renting from:

1. What's the total for my actual trip not just the daily number?
2. Dish, router, cables, case all included?
3. Shipping both ways covered, or is local pickup an option?
4. Deposit amount, and when do I actually see it refunded?
5. What's "normal wear" versus something they'll charge me for?

Takes five minutes. Saves a much more annoying conversation down the line.

Bottom line

$15 to $40 a day is the honest range, and longer rentals bring that number down. But the real total is never just the sticker price it's that plus shipping, deposits, and whatever their damage policy says.
