This is not a single technology but a convergence of several trends, including AI/ML, advanced analytics, and policy-driven control loops. For example, in a zero-touch scenario, a new enterprise customer could order a complex network service through a self-service portal (BSS). The system would then automatically design the service, provision the necessary network resources, configure the equipment, and activate the service (OSS), all without a single engineer touching a keyboard. This level of automation is essential to manage the complexity and scale of 5G and IoT networks cost-effectively, and it represents the pinnacle of operational efficiency that cloud-native OSS/BSS platforms are designed to enable.

On the business side, a major trend is the focus on enabling new and complex B2B, B2C, and B2B2X (Business-to-Business-to-Everything) monetization models. As revenue from traditional consumer mobile and broadband services plateaus, future growth for CSPs lies in the enterprise and IoT sectors. Cloud BSS platforms are being designed with the flexibility to handle these new models. This includes the ability to bill for a vast array of different metrics—not just gigabytes, but API calls, device connections, quality of service levels, or latency guarantees. It requires a flexible product catalog that can easily bundle connectivity with third-party applications and devices. A modern cloud BSS must be able to support a complex value chain, where the CSP might be billing an enterprise, who in turn is billing their own end-customers for a connected service. This shift from simple consumer billing to a complex, multi-party settlement and monetization engine is a key trend driving the evolution of BSS platforms.
