PXI switch modules automate this process, replacing complex and unreliable manual patch panels. This category includes several topologies. PXI multiplexers (MUX) are used to connect one point to many, ideal for scanning through a series of test points with a single DMM. PXI matrix switches offer the most flexibility, allowing any input to be connected to any output, which is useful for routing signals between various instruments and DUT ports. PXI RF and microwave switches are designed to maintain signal integrity at high frequencies, essential for routing signals in wireless test systems. Beyond simple routing, there are also PXI signal conditioning modules. These can include attenuators to reduce signal levels, amplifiers to boost them, and filters to remove unwanted noise. These switching and conditioning modules act as the configurable nervous system of a PXI test station, providing the routing flexibility needed to create truly automated and scalable test solutions.

Controllers, FPGAs, and Specialized Modules

Finally, a PXI system requires a set of foundational and specialized modules to function and to tackle unique challenges. The most important of these is the PXI controller, which is effectively the "brain" of the system. Controllers come in two main forms: embedded controllers, which are complete computers that slot directly into the chassis for a compact, all-in-one solution, and remote controllers, which use a cable and interface card to control the PXI chassis from a separate desktop or rack-mount PC, offering maximum processing power. Another increasingly vital type is the PXI FPGA module. As discussed, these modules contain a user-programmable FPGA that allows for the implementation of custom, real-time logic and signal processing directly in hardware. This is a game-changer for control applications and protocol emulation.
