Flexographic Printing Ink — Rheological Profiles and Anilox Delivery Chemistry in High-Speed Corrugated Production

Flexographic printing remains a dominant force in high-volume packaging production, particularly for corrugated boxes, flexible films, and labels. The success of a high-speed flexographic press depends heavily on the fluid dynamics and rheological profile of the flexographic printing ink. Because flexography utilizes a rotary press configuration with flexible photopolymer plates, the ink must feature an ultra-low viscosity—typically between 50 to 300 centipoise—enabling instantaneous fluid transfer through complex mechanical rollers operating at speeds exceeding 400 meters per minute.

The delivery mechanism relies on a laser-engraved ceramic roll known as an anilox roller, which controls the precise volume of ink delivered to the printing plate.

As the anilox roller rotates within the ink fountain, its microscopic cells fill with fluid. A carbon-fiber doctor blade then shears off any excess ink, leaving a uniform fluid volume. The ink must exhibit precise Newtonian or slight pseudoplastic (shear-thinning) behavior:

$$\eta = \frac{\tau}{\dot{\gamma}}$$

Where $\eta$ is viscosity, $\tau$ is shear stress, and $\dot{\gamma}$ is the shear rate. Under high mechanical shear between the doctor blade and the anilox surface, the ink's viscosity must remain stable to ensure uniform cell wiping. If the ink exhibits dilantant (shear-thickening) behavior, it can cause severe mechanical vibration, blade wear, and uneven ink transfer.

Once transferred from the anilox cells to the raised surfaces of the photopolymer plate, and subsequently onto the substrate, the ink must undergo rapid structural recovery. This thixotropic recovery prevents the ink from spreading or splashing outward under the pressure of the impression cylinder. If recovery is too slow, the print suffers from "halo effects" and dot gain, blurring fine barcodes and text.
