The explosion of wearable technology—from smartwatches and fitness bands to advanced medical patches and smart clothing—has created a new set of demands for energy storage. These devices must be comfortable, lightweight, and capable of conforming to the human body, a challenge that conventional rigid batteries simply cannot meet. The flexible battery for wearable technology is directly addressing this need, providing the power necessary to drive continuous health monitoring, seamless communication, and immersive experiences, all while being almost unnoticeable to the user. This application is the largest and fastest-growing segment of the Flexible Battery Market , which is projected to grow from $12.56 billion in 2025 to $88.48 billion by 2035.

The key to a successful flexible battery for wearables lies in its ability to withstand the rigors of daily use. Wearable devices are subjected to constant bending, twisting, and stretching as the user moves. To meet this challenge, engineers are developing innovative materials and designs. One promising approach is the use of kirigami, a paper-cutting technique that allows a material to stretch and flex without tearing. Researchers at McGill University, for instance, have created a biodegradable, stretchable battery made from magnesium, molybdenum, and a gelatin-based electrolyte containing citric acid . When cut in a kirigami pattern, the battery could stretch up to 80% without losing its ability to power a wearable pressure sensor .

The health sector, in particular, stands to benefit immensely from this technology. Flexible batteries are enabling a new generation of epidermal electronics that can be worn like a temporary tattoo to monitor vital signs, muscle activity (EMG), and heart activity (ECG) . In a practical demonstration, a fully flexible lithium-ion battery with a polymer and plastic crystal composite electrolyte was successfully used to power both EMG and ECG sensors, confirming its viability for continuous health monitoring applications . By providing a comfortable, unobtrusive, and reliable power source, the flexible battery for wearable is not just powering gadgets; it is powering a revolution in personal and preventative healthcare.
